Pomeranian breed-standard trim: what it is and why we never cut a Pom short

Search "Pomeranian haircut" and you'll find dozens of styles — teddy bear, "Boo", lion, fox. At Goofy Groom we offer a Pomeranian one haircut only: a trim to the breed standard. Here is what that means, and why we hold the line.
What is a breed standard?
Every recognised breed has a written standard — a description of how the ideal dog of that breed looks and moves. For the Pomeranian, the main standards are the FCI standard (No. 97, German Spitz, which includes the Pomeranian) and the UK Kennel Club standard.
On the coat, they say much the same thing:
- A double coat. A short, thick, cotton-wool-like undercoat under a long, straight, harsh outer coat that stands off the body.
- Short, velvety hair on the head, ears and the front of the legs.
- A thick mane around the neck and shoulders, feathering on the legs and a bushy tail.
- The FCI adds that the coat "must not look like being modelled".
A Pomeranian is meant to look like a round, fluffy little dog with a fox-like face. That look comes from the coat itself, not from scissors.
What is a breed-standard trim?
A breed-standard trim keeps the coat's full length and works with its natural shape. In our salon, a Full Groom for a Pomeranian includes:
- A thorough undercoat brush-out before and after the bath, so dead undercoat comes out instead of packing down.
- A two-round bath and a blow-out that lifts the outer coat and lets it stand off the body.
- A neat outline: a rounded silhouette, tidy paws, neatly finished ear tips and hygiene areas.
- Nails, ears and paw pads, done every visit.
Your Pom stays a Pom — just cleaner, lighter and tidier.
Why we never cut a Pomeranian short
The two layers grow at different speeds. When the outer coat is cut short, it grows back more slowly than the undercoat. The undercoat takes over, mats easily and the coat loses its texture and its ability to stand off the body.
The coat may not come back quickly. Veterinary dermatology describes post-clipping alopecia — hair that fails to regrow after a close clip. It is seen more often in plush, thick-coated breeds. Hair usually returns within three to four months, but in some dogs it takes a year or more.
The coat is protection. The outer coat shields the skin from sun; the undercoat traps air. In Dubai heat, what really helps is removing the dead undercoat, so air can reach the skin — not shaving the coat off.
If your Pomeranian's coat hasn't grown back after a clip, please see your vet: hair loss can also have medical causes. To help a shaved coat grow back, we recommend frequent brush-outs and moisturising care — shampoo, masks and conditioner.
What about the teddy bear or "Boo" cut?
It's popular on social media, and we understand why. But it is not a Pomeranian breed standard, and it means cutting the outer coat short — exactly what we avoid. We would rather give you a Pom that looks fluffy for years than for a few weeks.
How often should a Pomeranian be groomed?
- Full Groom — once a month: ears cleaned, nails trimmed, paw pads tidied, the coat deshedded and trimmed to standard.
- Hygienic Groom with a brush-out — every two weeks in between, so you don't have to battle the undercoat at home.
- Puppies under six months: the hygienic groom only, at a calm, gentle pace.
At home, brush down to the skin two or three times a week with a slicker brush and a metal comb, paying attention to behind the ears, the "trousers" and under the collar.
